| The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a worldwide organization for essentially any industry relating to technology. You can find out more about the organization as a whole at their website . Charger IEEE is the student branch of this organization for UAH. We serve to promote interest in engineering and technology among the student body and to gain recognition for the university through projects and national competitions, the most popular of which is the SoutheastCon's robotics competition. Out of around 30 teams, UAH achieved second place in the 2007 competition! If we can maintain a strong and cohesive group of interested individuals like yourselves, I'm confident that we can achieve the same or better in 2006. Don't think for a second that you can't contribute to the organization if you lack upper-level coursework or experience. We plan to host many projects at various skill levels so everyone who is interested in technology will be able to work on something that piques their interest and teaches them about technology. It's understandable, too, how the name of the organization--"IEEE"--seems to exclude anyone who isn't majoring in electrical engineering. That's definitely not the case. The student branch is home to mechanical engineers, math majors, computer science majors, physics majors, and many others all across the scientific spectrum--we've even had some from the College of Liberal Arts. All of our members, no matter their major, have had a role to play in the organization. We welcome anyone at UAH who's interested! We'd like to foster a productive environment that helps our members learn about and experiment with technology, where each member is open to both teach and learn. To this end, we've got quite a few resources for our members to utilize. We have the IEEE Projects Lab in the Engineering Building where we work on our projects. We're also working on some content for our own website, including a page that houses tutorials and articles on various subjects written by our members, information on past projects, and other materials. Additionally, to organize communication and information within the club, we have a set of open forums . The forums help keep the entire club on the same page with regard to projets and administrative issues. They're a place to ask technical questions and to keep up to date about issues facing the club. All emails sent by officers are also posted on the forums (including this one); additionally, all club meeting minutes are shared for the convenience of our members. We encourage anyone who's interested in Charger IEEE to register for the forums. I know that, as a senior at UAH, I've learned quite a bit about the university, the engineering department, the course material, and, of course, technology. Those of us who are a bit farther along are open to lend some advice to those who are early on in their college careers in hopes that they, in turn, will help others along when they're in the position to do so. I personally feel that an open environment is the key to a successful organization. Even at my somewhat late stage in the undergraduate curriculum, I still find myself learning from the club, and I wouldn't have it any other way. -- Gregory Reed, Charger IEEE President 2005-2006 |
